SHOULDER TREATMENT

Is Your Shoulder Pain Keeping You on the Sidelines?

Not all shoulder injuries require surgery, and many conditions improve with conservative treatment.

That’s why Dr. Maguire takes the time to thoroughly evaluate your shoulder, understand your symptoms and goals, and identify the underlying cause before recommending the most appropriate course of care. Surgery is only considered when it offers the best opportunity for lasting pain relief and restored function.

Depending on your condition, your individualized treatment plan could include one or more of the following:

Physical therapy
Activity modification
Anti-inflammatory medications
Image-guided injections
Interventional pain management
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, when appropriate

FAQs

Small or partial rotator cuff tears can often improve with conservative treatment, such as physical therapy and injections. Surgery could be required for larger or complete tears, especially if pain and weakness interfere with daily activities.

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves making very small incisions and inserting an arthroscope (a tube-shaped instrument) that contains a small video camera and light.

The camera is connected to a monitoring system that lets Dr. Maguire visualize the joint in incredible detail on the screen without having to open up the shoulder completely. He then uses specialized instruments to repair the damage.

Absolutely. Dr. Maguire has advanced training in sports medicine and gained experience treating athletes at all levels of competition, including professional sports, collegiate athletics, and high school teams.

He participated in medical coverage for organizations such as the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles during his fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University.

From baseball shoulder injuries to fractures, he helps athletes recover safely and return to play with confidence.

A SLAP tear is a specific type of labral tear that occurs at the top of the shoulder socket, where the labrum connects with the bicep tendon.

Other types of labral tears include a Bankart lesion, which occurs at the lower part of the labrum and, less commonly, a posterior labrum tear, which involves damage to the back of the shoulder socket.

Any type of labral tear can cause pain, instability, and reduced shoulder function.

Most patients do not require shoulder replacement. Shoulder replacement surgery is typically only recommended when conservative treatments no longer provide relief and arthritis or joint damage significantly affects quality of life.

If shoulder pain lasts more than a few weeks, limits your ability to work, exercise, play sports, or sleep, or follows a traumatic injury, it’s a good idea to schedule an evaluation with a shoulder specialist like Dr. James Maguire.
